Puppy Starter Lesson

At Houston Dog Ranch, we don't want you to the miss the opportunity to get your puppy started in the right direction. This course is designed so that puppies can begin any Saturday during the four week course. Learning takes place from the minute your puppy is born and continues for the rest of his life. The sooner you start your pup's introduction to the world the better. In this program we will cover: handling exercises, socialization, confidence building, name recognition, and proper manners.
Requirements: Puppies must be 16 weeks and younger. Puppies must have received their second round of vaccinations given by a licensed veterinarian a minimum of 5 days prior and be on a worming program. Required Second Round vaccinations are DHLPP/DA2PP (Distemper/Parvovirus Combo).
Puppy Prep I:
This class is a MUST for first time puppy owners or anyone who hasn’t had a puppy in recent years. Puppies are furry balls of fun, but they are also a lot of work. You will learn valuable information about raising and living with your puppy. Our class is designed to teach owners and their puppies the foundation skills needed for success in training and in life. An emphasis of the class is building good manners and communication, while focusing on attention, self-control, handling, and socialization. We will introduce your puppy to off-leash concepts and also short directed play sessions designed to teach owners appropriate play behaviors, stress signals, body language, and communication in dogs.
Requirements: Puppies must be between 8-14 weeks and must have received their second round of vaccinations given by a licensed veterinarian a minimum of 5 days prior to starting the class. Required Second Round vaccinations are DHLPP/DA2PP (Distemper/Parvovirus Combo), Third Round vaccinations are DHLPP/DA2PP (Distemper/Parvovirus Combo), and Bordetella.
Puppy Prep II:
This course, designed for our Puppy Prep I graduates, will continue to build on the basic foundation skills we began in Puppy Prep I. Training can become a bit more difficult at this stage, but is even more critical to ensure that your puppy will continue to pay attention to your instructions while working through adolescence. The training will focus on proofing the behaviors without the need for food lures, and to teach your puppy to enjoy all types of rewards (toys, praise, affection, etc.) rather than focusing solely on food rewards. Exercises will include distance sits, settle down, stay, recall, and both on-leash and off-leash walking and heeling. Puppy Prep II will help you teach your adolescent puppy to be calm, responsive, and attentive to you, as well as to respond quickly when distracted and/or at a distance.
Requirements: Completion of Puppy Prep I. Puppies must be between 14-20 weeks. The last round of Distemper/Parvovirus, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccinations is required by 16 weeks.
